GLOSSARY

(a.s.): Alaihi Al Salaam, (used after the name of any member of Ahlul Bayt is mentioned).
(pbuh): Peace be upon him, (used after the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned).
(swt): Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala (Used after Allah is mentioned)
Aadil:

An Attribute of Allah, meaning Just.

Aali Muhammad: The progeny of Muhammad (pbuh), usually means Ahlul Bayt
Aalim: An Attribute of Allah, meaning All-Knowing
Ashuraa': The tremendous happening in which Al-Husain (a.s.) lost his life in defense of the integrity of Islam against the forces that would have led to its disintegration (the government of Yazid)
Abadi: An Attribute of Allah, meaning everlasting, eternal
Adam: The first Prophet and the father of humanity.
Ahlul Bayt: Fatima and the Designated Imams (12) from Ali to Al-Mahdi (a.s.), who safeguarded the teachings of Islam and conferred it to the Ummah as Muham­mad (pbuh) had taught it
Ajr: Recompense by Allah for the good deed a person does.
Al‑Baqii: The area in which many of the Designated Imams and Sahaaba are buried.
Al‑Baseer: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Ever-Seeing.
Al‑Haadhir: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Ever-Present.
Al‑Hayy: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Ever-Living.
Al‑Husain: The 3rd Designated Imam, the Prince of the Martyrs, the son of Fatima (a.s.) and Ali (a.s.).
Al‑Mahdi: The 12th Designated Imam, who is in occultation, and will return to execute the Islamic rule and fill the earth with justice and Islamic integrity.
Al‑Mureed: An Attribute of Allah, referring to His Will, i.e., the Ever-Capable.
Al‑Mustafa: The chosen one, Muhammad (pbuh).
Al‑Saadiq: The 6th Designated Imam (a.s.).
Al‑Samee'i: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the All-Hearing.
Allah's Messenger: Prophet, often referring to Muhammad (pbuh).
Arafat: Plain of Arafat near Mecca renowned for Haj.
Athan: The call to the Salat, often chanted loud and in melodic voice.
Ayah: A verse of the Holy Quran
Azali: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Eternal.
Badr: Site of the first defensive battle of the Muslims against the disbelievers, remarkable victory for the Muslims
Baqi: An Attribute of Allah, meaning He will always remain to be.
Barzakh: Happenings in the period after the death of a person and before the Day of Judgment.
Chosen One: Al-Mustafa, Muhammad (pbuh).
Companions: Companions of the Prophet (pbuh).
Day of Reckoning: Day of Judgment
Dha'eef: A Hadith with weak references.
Dhul‑Hijjah: Month of Haj
Disbelievers: People who disbelieve in Islam (Kafir).
Du'aa: Prayer or supplication, can be said in any language and at any time.
Du'aa Iftitah: A magnificent Du'aa often said each night during Ramadhan.
Du'aa Jawshan Al‑Kabir: A magnificent Du'aa usually said during Ramadhan, Jubra'eel taught it to Muhammad (pbuh) and was conveyed by Imam Zainul Abideen.
Eid‑ul‑Fitr: Celebration after Ramadhan is completed.
Encounter of the Ditch: The third defensive encounter of the Muslims against the invading disbelievers in which Ali was outstanding.
Eve: The wife of Adam (Hawwa).
Faithful: The believers in Islam.
Fardh: Obligatory duty of worship.
Fatima: The beloved daughter of the Prophet (pbuh) and one of Ahlul Bayt, wife of Ali and mother of Al-Hasan and Al-Husain.
Favored Ones: The believers who follow the true teachings of Muhammad (pbuh).
Garden of Bliss: Paradise.
Ghadeer Khum:

The famous site in which Muhammad (pbuh) declared the Wilaayah of Ali (to have authority over people after the Prophet's death) in front of about 100,000 people after the Farewell Haj.

Ghusl: Complete bath taking the place of Wudu.
Hadith: Saying and recommendation of the Prophet (pbuh).
Haj Tamat'tu: The first phase of procedures of Haj.
Halal: What is Islamicly lawful and allowed.
Haram: What is Islamicly unlawful and not allowed and is punishable.
Hasan: Fair Hadith in accuracy although inferior to the Sahih in matter of authen­ticity.
Hawwa: Eve, wife of Adam.
Hell: Abode of those who displease Allah, (the disbelievers or those who had rejected the Islamic Directives).
Iftaar: Breaking the fast of Ramadhan.
Ihram: The state of purity intentioned and entered into before Haj.
Imam Ali: The first Designated Imam, the ardent supporter of Islam, the en­cyclopedia of Islam, the husband of Fatima, one of Ahlul Bayt.
Imamah: The belief in the 12 designated Imams, from Ali to the Al-Mahdi.  It is a component of the basic beliefs of the Ja'fari (Shi'a).
Imamiyah Way: The Ja'fari (Shi'a) belief.
Imsaak: Stopping from eating after Suhoor in Ramadhan.
Injeel: Gospel as was revealed to Prophet Isa (Jesus)
Iqaama:

The call to the Salat, said in low voice, usually after the Athan.

Iraada: The Will of Allah.
Ismah: The safeguarding of Prophets and Designated Imams from sin, religious error, or forgetfulness.
Ja'fari way: The teachings of Muhammad (pbuh) through Way of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.).
Jamrat ul Aqaba: Site in Mina where symbolically the performers of Haj stone the Sheitan.
Jannah: Paradise.
Jinn: Beings created from the energy of fire, Sheitan was one of them.
Jumu'ah Salat: Salat performed in congregation at noon on Friday.
Ka'ba: The large cubic structure built by Prophet Ibrahim and Isma'eel, and toward which Muslims direct themselves during Salat.
Kafir: The disbelievers.
Khutba: Sermon given after the Jumu’ah Salat.
Leilatul‑Qadr: A very important night in Ramadhan, night of redemption and for­giveness.
Lesser Jihad: Striving for Islam with effort, money, and even sacrificing self if need be, if the Ummah is endangered.
Ma'ad: The Hereafter.
Ma'soom: The person safeguarded by Allah from sin, error and forgetfulness, meaning the Prophets and Designated Imams.
Major Jihad: Refining the self in its behavior along the Islamic directives.
Major Judgment: Happenings during the Day of Judgment.
Mak'rooh: Islamicly undesirable act but not punishable.
Marwa: A boulder near the Ka'ba, of historic importance, as well as of impor­tance during Haj.
Measure of Account: The accounting of a person's deeds during the Day of Judgment.
Mecca: The town in which the Islamic Message was first delivered.
Mina: A place near Mecca of importance during Haj.
Minor Judgment: The minor account by Munkar and Nakeer that takes place when a person dies.
Moothaq: Hadith almost as good as the Sahih (agreed upon).
Mount Arafat: A mount outside Mecca of importance during Haj.
Mu'baah: An action permitted by Islam.
Mu'min: Believer.
Mudrik: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Perceiver.
Muhammad (pbuh): The last Prophet (pbuh) to humanity
Muj'tahid: The religious representative who studies religious problems and reaches a verdict along the guidelines of Shari'ah.
Munkar: One of the angels who conduct the minor judgment after a person dies.
Mus'tahab: An Islamicly preferable act or deed.
Musa:

Prophet Moses.

Mutakallim: An Attribute of Allah, meaning Master of the Word.
Muzdalifah: A site of importance during the Haj.
Nabiy: Prophet.
Nakeer: One of the angels who conduct the minor judgment after a person dies.
Nawafil: Voluntary Salats.
Ohod: The second defensive battle of the Muslims against the disbelievers in which Ali defended the Prophet (pbuh) magnificently.
Omrah: Haj not in its proper time.
Paradise: Heaven.
Path: The path used to reach the destination of Paradise or Hell.
Qadeem: An Attribute of Allah, meaning the Timeless.
Qadhaa: A compensation, of Salat or other religious duties not done at the proper time or circumstance.
Qibla: Direction for Salat.
Qudrah: Allah's Capability.
Quran: Allah's Holy Book for humanity.
Ramadhan: Month of fasting.
Religiously illegal: Haram
Revelation: Angel Jubra'eel bringing an Ayah or Ayahs to the Prophet (pbuh).
Risaala: The Message, usually meaning Islam.
Sa'y: Procedure done during Haj.
Safa: A boulder near the Ka'ba, of historic importance, as well as of impor­tance during Haj.
Saheefa of Ali: Hadith as registered by Ali after the death of the Prophet (pbuh).
Sahih: A Hadith agreed upon (Authentic).
Salat of Eid: Salat after Ramadhan or the occasion of Haj.
Salat of Janaaza: Salat for the soul of someone who died and before his or her burial.
Sayyid: A person descendant of the Prophet (pbuh).
Scrolls: The Revelations to Prophet Ibrahim, they were lost.
Shahaada: The declaration of acceptance of Islam.
Shari'ah: The Islamic injunctions according to the Directives in the Holy Quran.
Suhoor: The last meal before starting the fast.
Surah: Chapter of the Holy Quran.
Tamjeed: Recitation of special Du'aas at dawn during Ramadhan.
Tawaf: Circulating 7 times around the Ka'ba during Haj.
Tawaf of Nisaa: A procedure to be done following the procedure of Haj, otherwise the wife will not be lawful to her husband.
Tayammum: What takes the place of Wudu when usually water is not available.
Towraat: Torah.
Wahy: The process of Revelation.
Wudu: Ablution to be done before Salat.
Yazid: The tyrant and dictator who was imposed on the Islamic Ummah by his father Mu'awiya, who fought Al-Husain, and caused much damage to Islam
Zaboor: Psalms.
Zakat‑ul‑Fitr: The amount of money to be given to the poor before Eid ul Fitr.
Zamzam: The well near Ka'ba.
