AYAH: 83-91

"O My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous

This is a supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) and many Muslims say it after they finish off their Salat.

This passage was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) at a time when a good many arguments and disputes were taking place between him and the disbelievers of Mecca.  Through this Revelation the disbelievers learned how Prophet Ibrahim had argued with his own people about their worshiping idols, and how in the end he disowned himself from them, calling them the lost people.  Even his father was one of them, continuing his pagan religion and worshiping idols.

At one time, Prophet Ibrahim promised his father he would pray to Allah for his salvation, and Ibrahim, the Prophet, fulfills his promise to his father in this poetic selection of the Quran.  In this special prayer Ibrahim shows how tender-hearted he is, gentle, warm, full of humility, and totally submissive to Allah.

Ø "O Lord grant me wisdom," he says, and he was full of wisdom to begin with, but he feels he needs more of it, so he asks Allah for it in all humility.  He was eager for more wisdom, to sharpen his discretion and reason, and to let him have deeper insight.

Ø Prophet Ibrahim continues: "and join me with the righteous," he says that though he was most righteous and one of the greatest Prophets of Allah!  This shows a true humility and deep insight into one's self in relation to the Creator.  It shows that Ibrahim knew how modest his means were and how needy he was for Allah's support.

وَاجْعَل لِّي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ    go to top of page

and favor me with honorable mention among the posterity,

Prophet Ibrahim asked Allah's help in later generations too, so that those generations will keep carrying on the Message of Allah which Ibrahim brought to the world, and to abide by it.  In other words, Prophet Ibrahim was asking the Almighty to help the people carry on Allah's Directives and so be saved, and to help them preserve their religious integrity and carry on their responsibilities towards Allah.  Prophet Ibrahim prayed eloquently for the continuation of the enlightenment of the faith and the persistence of its teachings in the generations after him.

وَاجْعَلْنِي مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ النَّعِيمِ    go to top of page

and make me (one) of the heirs of the Garden of Bliss,

Once again Prophet Ibrahim shows his deep humility and need of Allah's mercy and compassion.  He knows that a person cannot be worthy or deserving of Paradise unless he reaches the high plateau of righteousness by putting the religious guidelines into action, and works diligently for it.

But Prophet Ibrahim also knew the frailties of man and his ceaseless need for Allah's help and support.  So, Ibrahim prayed to Allah to grant him the honor of being in the Garden of Bliss, along with others whom Allah chooses to be there.

وَاغْفِرْ لأَبِي إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ    go to top of page

And forgive my father.  Verily, he was of those

who went astray;

Prophet Ibrahim also asks Allah Almighty to forgive his father, though Ibrahim's father was an idol worshipper, a pagan.

He did this despite the fact his father disagreed with him, pressured him, harassed him, and aggrieved him.  None of these measures provoked Prophet Ibrahim, but what provoked him was that his father declined to accept Prophet Ibrahim's religion, and he was too blind to see its enlightenment.

But you may say how can a Prophet pray for the welfare of a pagan or even someone who associates others with Allah?!  The answer is that Prophet Ibrahim had promised his father sometime before that he would pray for him.  He is doing it here out of fulfillment of the promise, no more no less.

وَلاتُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ    go to top of page

and do not disgrace me on the Day when people are raised (again),

Note that Prophet Ibrahim prays to Allah not to disfavor or disgrace him on the Day of Judgment.  This again shows the depth of knowledge of Ibrahim and how very needy everyone is of Allah's mercy and forgiveness, even the Prophets.  It also shows Ibrahim's deep knowledge of the heavy responsibility man carries while passing through this earthly life, and how he should spend it in tireless work, not only in applying Allah's religion but also in trying to spread it.

To earn Paradise and be worthy of it you have to work for it now, while on earth, but you also need Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

يَوْمَ لا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلا بَنُونَ    go to top of page

The Day when neither wealth nor offspring will be of any avail.

This is a continuation of the previous Ayah and it refers to the Day of Judgment, a day when all persons are on equal footing in their rights before Allah and have to account for their deeds, intentions, behavior, and work during their earthly life.

Persons of wealth, influence, leadership, invention, and thought, all these and many other notables, will stand equally in front of Allah to account for their faith, their work, and their conduct.  They will all be equal in their rights not only to each other but also to the meek and weak, and they will have the same rights be they males or females, black or white or whatever nationality they are.

They will excel each other in one aspect and that is explained in the next verse.

إلاّ مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ    go to top of page

except for him who came to Allah with a sincere heart.

The important aspect that helps distinguish the good from the bad, the saved from the doomed, will be the quality of their work for Allah during their lifetime and the sincerity of their effort in that regard.

Ø Were the Islamic Directives taken seriously?

Ø Were they applied well?

Ø Did the person strive for Allah?

Ø What kind of life did he lead?

Ø How pure was he inside?

Ø How sincere was he?

Ø What was his capacity?

Ø What circumstances influenced him? and

Ø many other factors which enter into the picture.  The outcome may be good (Paradise) or it may be bad (Hell).  Allah's mercy will always come into play and His love and compassion will play its role.

So we pray, as did Prophet Ibrahim before, for Allah's mercy and forgiveness, and ask to be among the winners.

Paradise shall be brought near for those who

safeguarded themselves against evil;

while Hell shall be made manifest to those who went astray.

This is a further reminder and emphasizes what will happen to the believers who do well, and how on the Day of Judgment, Heaven will look so near and within easy reach, and it will appear so lovely, enticing, captivating, and attractive.  At last the believers' goal is near at hand, the promise of Allah is true as they know it is, and the best award can be seen nearby, Paradise itself, close.

On the other hand, there will be a different surprise for those who denied the faith or did not work for the Hereafter, and their surprise will be doubly terrifying.  They will see how foolish they were, and how terrible of them to ignore Allah's teachings.

They will be petrified, frightened and intimidated at the sight of Hellfire and how ferocious it looks.  Oh how much they wish they are given another chance, another opportunity to come back to earth and have a virtuous life, a life in the right direction.  Nay, their wishes won't come true, but Allah's promise will, and He has warned people, but they did not heed.  They deserved to be in Hell

This selection in brief:   go to top of page

  1. This selection is a supplication by Prophet Ibrahim.

  2. This supplication gives us an insight into how gentle and tender‑hearted Prophet Ibrahim was, and into the degree of his humility and submission to Allah.

  3. This supplication asks Allah for:

    1. giving us an increased measure of wisdom,

    2. joining us with the righteous,

    3. helping us carry our responsibilities toward Islam,

    4. protecting us against our frailties and weaknesses, and granting us the honor of being in Paradise.

  4. This supplication also asks Allah not to disgrace or disfavor us on the Day of Judgment, since this is a Day in which:

    1. wealth or influence will not matter,

    2. social standing and family will not prevail either,

    3. good Islamic work with sincerity of heart will be the means for salvation, and it is the thing that counts.

  5. That the pious and righteous will see their dream come true, that Paradise is so attractive and lovely, and it is theirs.

  6. That the disbelievers will be frightened and intimidated upon seeing Hell, which will be theirs.
