Surah Al-Falaq

(THE DAWN)

Surah #113 Consisting of 5 Ayahs

  Listen to Surah Al-Falaq

In Allah's Name, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn,
from the evil of that which He created,
and from the evil of the darkness as it spreads

and from the evil of those who blow into knots,

and from the evil of the envier when he envies.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn,  go to top of page

Allah (swt) asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and all of us to declare that we ask for protection and seek refuge in Him as the Lord of the dawn.  Allah Almighty as the Lord of the dawn can be taken with many interpretations:

  1. as the dawn of knowledge that puts forth light into the darkness of ignorance,

  2. as He brings forth the dawn of each day, a sign of creation,

  3. as He is Allah who delivers us from what the darkness of the night conceals for us, and

  4. as Allah is the Lord of guidance who has provided us with minds to be used in the best way possible.

Allah Almighty describes Himself as the Lord of Knowledge and Truth, which will remove the darkness of ignorance and superstition.

from the evil of that which He created, go to top of page

We ask Allah's protection from the evil of many things that can befall us.  All things are created by Allah.  Some of these things have their potential of harming us.  We ask Allah's protection from all possible bad that can happen to us.

and from the evil of the darkness as it spreads, go to top of page

We also ask Allah's help to protect us from bad things that can happen in the darkness.  We ask Allah to protect us from people with evil intentions, who might formulate and/or carry out their evil acts under the cover of darkness.

Darkness can also mean the darkness of ignorance, the darkness of those who deny Allah and His Message.  As the darkness of ignorance spreads into the hearts and minds of man, we seek refuge in Allah's protection from such tendency.  Any evil is a darkness that can spread across a community, examples of which are love of money, obsession with success, and being egomaniac, among other things.  These can overtake people to such an extent that they lose their sense of right and wrong.

No one can protect us better than our Lord, Allah Almighty, and no one is more compassionate towards us than He.

and from the evil of those who blow into knots,  go to top of page

We also ask Allah's help to protect us from people who try to trick us or take advantage of us.  In an allegorical example, there are people who cast spells by blowing into knots, as was done at the time of the Prophet (pbuh).  There are people who do similar tricks with us.  We ask Allah to protect us from the corruption of the people who make us see things the way they want us to.

We ask Allah to protect us from people who try to manipulate us to trick us from seeing the truth of Allah and His Message.  They might even make their evil actions seen as if they were in line with Allah's Message.

and from the envier when he envies.  go to top of page

Lastly, we ask Allah's protection from envy and jealousy and what they can lead to.  Jealousy and envy are strong emotions that can take over the heart and mind.  They may lead a person to evil things.  Jealousy is a bad thing.  A person who envies may go too far in his envy.  He may have thoughts of hurting or destroying the person he is envying, or he may even destroy the well‑being of others.

An envier can damage, can hurt and he may destroy.  If he goes too far, an envier can destroy the material and the spiritual goods of the people he envies.

In conclusion, Allah is saying look to My Light and take refuge in Me to save yourselves.

THROUGH SURAH AL-FALAQ ALLAH WANTS US TO:  go to top of page

  1. ask His protection and help since Allah is the Lord of Dawn (Knowledge):

    1. from the trouble that bad people can give us,

    2. from the trouble that can happen to us in the dark,

    3. from the problems that some tricky people try to lead us to, and

    4. from the problems of envious people, who may destroy because of their intense envy.

  2. rely exclusively upon Him, use our minds to the best of our ability, and to seek His help in discerning light from darkness, truth from falsehood.

  3. live a well balanced life, have solid faith, and a mind to use wisely, we are to balance our lives along the lines of the Islamic Shari'ah.

Say Surah Falaq whenever you feel scared, threatened, or troubled.  Allah Almighty will hear you, His compassion will grace you, and His protection will come to you.  Also say it when you want Allah to guide you away from impious ideas.

Take refuge in Allah (swt) and ask Him with humility for His help; and help will come to you.  He will protect you from the many external troubles that can happen to you, especially when you pray from the bottom of your heart.  Allah's Guidance and Light will always be there for you.
