AL-NUBU'WAH

PROPHETHOOD

USOOL AL-DEEN

(Basics of Faith)

1. Divine Oneness (Tawhid)
2. Divine Justice (Adl)
3. Prophethood (Nubu’wah)
4. Imamah (Belief in Imams)
5. Hereafter (Ma’ad)

Allah Almighty is All-Perfect, All-Knowing, and All-Wise.  Allah has created mankind and has given numerous qualities to each and every human.  Many of these qualities lay untapped or dormant.  Being All-Knowing, Allah (swt) knows the potential of these qualities and what they can do to the person once they are activated and put to use and once the proper directives are given.

Allah (swt) also knows that man can learn about the Creator in an indirect way without being able to see Him.  Allah knows that man can observe the nature around him, study the sciences, and come to conclusion about the existence of Allah and have a fair idea about Him.

But this alone is not enough.  Man needs and has needed detailed guidance, a guidance that will help him develop in the proper manner, along the right course.  Man needs a special stimulus to bring forth his hidden qualities, and develop them.

Almighty Allah of course is and was fully aware of all this.  Allah (swt) knows the weaknesses of man, and He knows the many needs of man from the very start.  Allah of course will not leave man prey to his weaknesses or allow him (or her) to drown in his or her ignorance.

Being all-wise, and through His divine justice, Allah from the beginning gave His Directives to man in the form of religion.  He did it in a unique way.  He selected certain men from time to time to convey to the people the Grand Message, the Message of Allah.

The man Allah selected is called a Prophet, ),.  The directives Allah sent to the Prophets were by way of Revelation (Wahy).

Man is not left to himself, Allah's grace and His love came to him through many Prophets, by way of Revelations to a given Prophet by Angel Jubra'eel (Gabriel).  Allah's concern for man, His care, and His grace have led to the selection of these great people called Prophets.

These Prophets conveyed the Message of Allah to the people, word by word, in its entirety.  The people listened, some would believe and follow the Prophet, while others would disbelieve and ridicule him.  Those who believe and follow the Divine Message are called the believers or Mu'min or Faithful.  Those who disbelieve in the Grand Message of Allah and ignore it, are called the Kafir or Disbelievers.

The believers gain tremendously from the guidance of the Heavenly Message, because the Directives show them the way and bring to fruition the many good qualities they were endowed with.  Allah's Message will make them good people of decency, reliability, and integrity, people who are upright, truthful, and virtuous.  Not only that, but after these people die the grace of Allah will engulf them again and they will be greatly rewarded with the promised Paradise.

This is one element of Divine Justice, and it is through this that Prophethood was established.  Allah's guidance to humanity kept coming, and through this guidance, a better direction for mankind was the result.

HOW ARE THE PROPHETS SELECTED?  go to top of page

Allah is All-Perfect and All-Wise.  He fully knows the capacity of each one of us and He knows fully our potential.  Allah also knows that when a certain community is in need of His Message He will guide it.  When Allah's wisdom so decrees, Allah will select a man from that community and ordain him as a Prophet.

Revelations come to the Prophet by way of Angel Jubra'eel (Gabriel).  The Prophets convey to the people Allah's Message with vigor and vitality.  The Prophets had taught the people and educated them in religion.

The person appointed by Allah is not an ordinary person, he is superhuman.  Such a perfect person is an example to others.  Such a person is safeguarded against sin, mistakes, or forgetfulness.  Such a person is called Ma'soom.

WHAT IS MEANT BY MA'SOOM?  go to top of page

A person chosen to be a Prophet is of course not an ordinary man.  When Allah (swt) selects a person He knows that the one He chooses has the highest qualities, the greatest nobility, integrity, and capability.  He knows that the man chosen is a leader of men, is intelligent, sharp, and keen-minded, that he is a man of inner peace, composure, patience, and understanding, a man of devotion and purity.

This chosen man is the one to lead his community according to the directives of Allah as was the case with all Prophets.  But some Prophets had a larger role, a much larger role.  This is especially true of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), whose role was to convey the completed divine message of Islam to the whole world, to everyone, everywhere, for all time.

To guide the people over the years such a man has to be free from sin and immune from misguiding people even by simple oversights.  This means that Allah will "safeguard" such a person all through his life, and He will safeguard him from mistakes, from any sins, and make him immune to any fallacies or forgetfulness.  Therefore, the Prophet will be an absolutely perfect person.  He is safeguarded by Allah, and he is what we call Ma'soom.

The process of safeguarding is called Ismah, and that is why Allah said about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh):  (Surah  53:  Ayah  3)

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَى    إِنْ هُوَ إلاّ وَحْيٌ يُوحَى

HE (MUHAMMAD) DOES NOT SPEAK OUT OF HIS OWN

DESIRE, VERILY HIS IS REVELATION REVEALED.

A Prophet shows the people the ways of Allah, thus he elevates their standards, improves them spiritually, and helps them strive to attain spiritual perfection.  To do all this a Prophet has to be a man of perfection.  Therefore, Ismah (being safeguarded from error) is an essential requirement in Prophethood.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPHETS  go to top of page

The first Prophet was Adam, and the last and the greatest was Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).  Certain Prophets stand out, notably Prophet Nooh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Prophets came to different communities with different languages all over the world.  They all preached Divine Oneness, and they all delivered Allah's Heavenly Message as revealed to them.

Some of the Prophets mentioned in the Holy Quran are: Adam, Nooh, Ibrahim, Loot, Isma'eel, Ishaaq, Ya'qoob, Yousuf, Musa, Haroon, Shu'aib, Hood, Salih, Dawood, Suleiman, Zakariah, Yahya, Isa, and of course Muhammad (pbuh).

Some Prophets, notably Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus), were empowered by Allah with the power to perform miracles.  The miracles served a purpose at the time, but were temporary in their impact.  The miracles also led to controversies among people, depending on who believed in them and who denied them.

The miracle of miracles was that of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): it was the Holy Quran itself.  The reason for saying so is that the Quran is a book that has continued to enlighten the whole world, all through the ages.  The Quran dares and defies any and everyone to produce something similar.  No one has ever been able to do so.  Not only that, but it continues to invite mankind to study it, learn it, read it, and be improved by it.  No matter how many times a person reads the Holy Quran he or she always comes out wiser, feeling better inside, and feeling overwhelmed by its universal and infinite truth, its eloquent style, its precision, its purity, and by the powerful way it deals with subjects.

The Quran is a continuous miracle that keeps renewing the faith and strengthening the person of those who read it seriously and study it closely.

WHAT ARE THE HOLY BOOKS?  go to top of page

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) had Scrolls ; however, they were lost and there is no trace of them.  Prophet Musa (Moses) had the Torah (Towraat) revealed to him, while Prophet Dawood (David) was given the Psalms (Zaboor).  Prophet Isa (Jesus) was given the Gospel (Injeel).  None of these Heavenly Books remain as they were first revealed.  They were modified a good many times; therefore, they differ to an unknown extent from the original text.

The Revealed Holy Books:

a.  Ibrahim  (Abraham): Scrolls (lost)

b.  Musa (Moses): Torah (modified)

c.  Dawood (David): Psalms (modified)

d.  Isa (Jesus): Gospel (modified)

e.  Muhammad (pbuh): The Quran

The Holy Quran is the only Book that appears as it was revealed, completely unchanged or modified.  The Holy Quran has a tremendous amount of Allah's Guidance, far more than the Bible has.  The Holy Quran is full and replete with knowledge that guides the heart with comfort toward purity and goodness.  It gently takes a person to new heights of inward purity and spirituality, and to new discoveries about Allah Almighty.

A Muslim believes in everything in the Quran, since it is the Word of Allah.  Whatever the Holy Quran confirms of other "Holy Books" we believe in, and whatever the Quran disclaims and discredits of other "Holy Books" we reject.

ØWhen the Holy Quran speaks of the angels of Allah and when its information differs from that in the Old Testament or New Testament, we believe only in the information according to the Holy Quran.  Thus, the Quranic knowledge about the angels of Allah supersedes that in other "Holy Books".

Learning from the Quran is a continuous process because the fountain of its knowledge is ever-flowing, ever-appealing, ever-comforting, everlasting, and ever-satisfying.

No wonder we call this Book of Allah the Miracle of Miracles, the ever-present miracle, the continuous miracle.

The Quran continues all the Truths in the other Holy Books.  It confirms what is genuine in them and it embodies all the truths revealed to all the Prophets before.  The Quran contains comprehensive instructions for the guidance of mankind until the Day of Judgment.

WHAT IS THE ISLAMIC SHARI'AH?  go to top of page

The Laws revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) are called the Shari'ah.  They came to be applied and used to the advantage of all mankind for all times.  These laws displace and transcend all the previous religious laws, because Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the last Prophet.  The Shari'ah (Islamic Law) cannot be improved upon, it is just as Islam is, the final words in religion.

The Shari'ah means those laws given by Allah for the correction, improvement, and perfection of humanity.  Since the final word of Allah is in Islam, Islam has thus suspended former religious tenets.  The Laws in Islam (Shari'ah) are so comprehensive that they are unalterable and will remain so for all ages, yet they are flexible enough to fit any change in man's condition.

The distinctive feature of Islam is its moderation.  It neither overlooks the material wants of man nor neglects the cravings of the soul.  It has combined spirituality and material existence into one.  It has made the two work hand in hand.

THE BOOK TO LAST, THE QURAN:  go to top of page

The Holy Quran is the only existing revealed Book of Allah without alteration or modification, and it is the only revealed Book in a genuine sense.

Firstly, it has either embodied in itself or suspended the religious commandments of former Prophets.  All that we have to believe about early revelations is that they were from Allah.  In practical life, though, we have solely to depend upon the Quran.

Secondly, no other Holy Book exists in its original form except the Quran.

THE HOLY QURAN  go to top of page

  1. The Holy Quran is Allah's Word, revealed by Jubra'eel (Gabriel) to Muhammad (pbuh) over 23 years.

  2. The Holy Quran is the miracle of all miracles.

  3. The Holy Quran's depth of meaning is limitless.

  4. The Holy Quran is most moving to persons who know Arabic.

  5. The Holy Quran has changed societies for the better, once it was followed.

There are numerous translations of the Holy Quran in different languages of the world, but no translation can ever give the Quran its due worth, not even a fraction of it.

WHAT DOES THE QURAN SAY ABOUT THE PROPHETS?

Each Prophet was an exceptional man specifically chosen by Allah.  Allah does not speak to a Prophet directly.  Allah sends Angel Jubra'eel to announce this news to the chosen Prophet.  Upon seeing Jubra'eel for the first time, the Prophet becomes apprehensive.  However, as Jubra'eel appears more often, the Prophet becomes used to him and anxiously awaits his reappearance.

ØAngel Jubra'eel delivered the Message of Allah to the Prophet.  He taught the Prophet a few things at a time.  The Prophet then went to his people and started teaching them.

The Prophets became great leaders of their own people.  Their task was extremely difficult.  It was not easy to convince people to change their way of life.

At first, most people did not like to hear the Prophet's teachings.  Many of them simply did not want to believe.  Often people were cruel, to the Prophets and to their early followers.

The Prophets were exceptionally strong-willed men, of high character, and of the highest principles.  They were excellent leaders.  Allah Almighty chooses only the finest, the most fit men for this glorious and life-long, arduous task.  The Prophets did not feel scared or disappointed simply because their people made fun of them.  On the contrary, the Prophets were extremely patient and they continued to preach their Message, the Message of Allah.  They were very courageous and kept teaching the people wherever they went and to anyone who listened.

WHAT DID THE PROPHETS TEACH?  go to top of page

All of the Prophets taught about the Oneness of Almighty Allah and His greatness.  They taught us to worship Allah.  They taught us about the Religion of Allah.  The people of the time liked to do evil things.  They followed Sheitan and his sneaky whisperings.  They followed their desires.  This made them greedy, cruel, and unkind.  It made them cheat and lie, and it made them do many evil things to fulfill their evil desires.

When Prophets are chosen by Allah they start teaching people that there is Almighty Allah, that we should follow His Religion and love Him and fear Him.  Then they teach how to worship Allah and pray to Him.  They teach people how to become righteous through the Guidance of Allah.  The Prophets taught people to become kind and helpful, to speak the truth and keep their word, and to have good manners.  They taught people not to take the word of Allah lightly, to avoid doing evil, and not to follow their desires blindly.

All Prophets taught the same basic beliefs about Allah and His religion.  Allah's Message never changes.  People who followed the teachings became very good people and Almighty Allah was pleased with them and gave them His blessings.  The people would feel content and would gain in this life and especially in the Hereafter.  The Prophets taught us about the Angels too.

THE ANGELS  go to top of page

The Prophets taught us that Allah Almighty created the angels a long time ago.  He created angels long before He created Adam.  They worshipped Allah and glorified Him.  They did their duties well and were perfectly submissive to Allah.

When Allah created Adam, He wanted all the angels to bow and submit to him.  There were thousands and thousands of angels.  Adam was created from the elements of earth, from mere clay.  It was a sign of Allah (Ayah) that man—with eyes and ears, with arms and legs, and a beating heart—was created only from clay.  This man was not like the animals for he could speak, think, and decide.  He could judge and choose between right and wrong, good and bad.

Allah wanted all the Angels to bow in respect to this man, the man with the mind whom He called Adam.

DID THEY BOW?  go to top of page

Angels were created from the energy of light.  Allah created them in such a way that they always obeyed Him.  They have no desire to disobey Allah whatsoever.  Allah, of course, knew this and how they were different from Adam.  He wanted the angels to bow to Adam (to give in to him) to acknowledge him as superior.

ØWhen the Almighty said, "Bow to Adam," the thousands upon thousands of angels bowed without question, obeying the Almighty immediately.  In other words, they submitted to Adam though they were superior to him because of the way they were created.  They bowed, respectfully, admiringly and with submission out of obedience to Allah's will.

ØBut, alone there stood Iblees (Sheitan).  He was a Jinn among the angels, and he stood defiant.  He deliberately refused to obey Allah's orders.  He was mean and arrogant; he thought very highly of himself.  Iblees (Sheitan) had joined the Angels many times before, but now he decided to defy Allah on purpose, for he was full of himself.  He was an extremely important Jinn, and he never used to disobey Allah.  Now, however, he decided to oppose Allah; therefore, feeling so important he refused to obey.

"Why did you not bow to Adam?" asked Allah.

"Do you want me to bow (give in) to Adam as my superior, one You created from mere clay while You have created me from the energy of fire?" answered Sheitan with defiance and arrogance.

ØToo proud, Sheitan (Satan) felt superior to Adam, and felt that Adam did not deserve much, let alone being bowed to.  After all Adam was a mere human.  Allah had made Iblees (Sheitan) from the energy of fire, a far superior source than what Adam was made from.

WHAT DID ALLAH DO TO IBLEES?  go to top of page

When Iblees (Sheitan) defied Allah and refused to bow, Allah (swt) wanted to give Sheitan the punishment he deserved.  Sheitan, however, asked a favor from Allah.  He asked Allah to let him have the freedom to act and to live until the Day of Judgment.  Allah Almighty, being ever generous, agreed to the request, and He granted Sheitan his wish.

This is how it came to pass that Sheitan is on this earth tempting us to do evil.  Sheitan began his work right away.  Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Bliss contentedly enjoying Allah's bounty.  Sheitan wanted to tempt Adam and his wife to disobey Allah.  He talked to them sneakily, often, and in very persuasive ways.

Now on the earth at this time, there was a certain tree of knowledge.  Almighty Allah had ordered Adam and Hawwa not to approach this tree.  Sheitan, however, was deceptive and sneaky.  He made them feel as if it was good to approach this tree.  He kept talking to Adam and Hawwa over and over again, giving them the feeling that once they approached the tree they would discover something very precious and marvelous, and, oh, how exciting it would be.

Innocently, Adam and Hawwa listened to Sheitan and his ideas, and their desire began to grow.  That desire became very strong.  Their aim now was to approach the tree—the tree that seemed to have all the marvelous secrets of life.  The more they thought, the more they wanted it.  Finally they succumbed and approached the tree.  Having done this, they were immediately overcome with a feeling of guilt, they felt very bad.  Suddenly they realized they had disobeyed the Almighty.  They felt extremely guilty.

You see, when they approached the tree, they suddenly were able to sense things they had never been aware of before.  Things seemed so different now.  How bad it had been to listen to Sheitan, and to follow their desires!  How sinful it was!  They felt let down, deceived and cheated by Sheitan!

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM AFTERWARDS?  go to top of page

Adam, along with his wife Hawwa (Eve), felt very guilty, very sorry.  They begged Allah and they kept begging Him to forgive them.  Allah, being forgiving and compassionate, did forgive them their sin.  But He forgave them with a condition.  This condition changed everything for Adam, Hawwa, and for mankind from then on.  What a drastic change it was!

Now that Sheitan had succeeded in making them disobey Allah, Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Bliss.  They had been content and had led pure lives in the Garden.  Now Allah was displeased with them.

From that time on, both Adam and his wife were not to be living in the Garden of Bliss, neither would their children.  Adam and his family, with all their descendants, would live an ordinary life, just like ours now, and only for a certain length of time.  We will all die sometime.  Afterward we will be raised on the Day of Judgment.  On that day, we will be judged and given our just reward, and if we are good we will be rewarded Heaven.

So, during life on earth, Sheitan had promised to bring mischief, to do numerous evil things, and to entice everyone as much as possible.  Sheitan was a powerful Jinn, but after disobeying Allah, Sheitan became an absolute terror.  He is the one who makes us want to be sneaky and dishonest, to lie and cheat, and to do many bad, deceitful things.  Sheitan fools us in devious ways to disobey our Creator, Allah.  He tries to make us do bad things.  In other words, Sheitan leads us to follow our wild desires, to disobey Allah or the teachings of Allah.  If we follow what Sheitan tempts us to, we will certainly lose.  However, if we resist the temptations of Sheitan, and obey Allah, we will be the ones who have gained.  We know this even though we cannot see Sheitan because he is invisible.

CAN WE SEE THE ANGELS?  go to top of page

We cannot see the angels at all.  Allah Almighty made them in such a way that we simply cannot see them.  For example, we cannot see electricity but we know it is there.  We cannot see magnetism either.  In the same way, we cannot see the angels.

The Prophets, however, did see them.  Numerous times, Angel Jubra'eel (Gabriel) appeared in the form of a very handsome man with wings.  This happened many times when he revealed a Message from Almighty Allah to a Prophet.

Muhammad (pbuh) was apprehensive when he saw Jubra'eel for the first time.  He saw Jubra'eel in the expanse of space between the skies and the earth.  Whenever Muhammad (pbuh) moved his face, he could see Jubra'eel.  Muhammad (pbuh) was overwhelmed and awe struck.  After several appearances of the Angel Jubra'eel, the Prophet felt ecstasy and tremendous comfort in seeing him.

Other Prophets saw Angel Jubra'eel too, because he was the one who brought the Message of Allah to the Prophets.  But Jubra'eel was not the only angel who was seen by man.  At times other angels appeared too.  There were the three angels who were dressed like men and came to give the good news to Prophet Ibrahim.  They told him that his very old wife Sarah was going to have a baby by the wish of Allah.  The old woman, Sarah, became surprised, yet she did become pregnant and she had her baby nine months later.  As you know, old women don't become pregnant.  Sarah, however, did miraculously become pregnant by the wish of Allah.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT ANGELS:  go to top of page

The Angels, as we said, are invisible to us.  Allah Almighty made them that way.

▪   We cannot see them, but they may see us.

▪   Angels don't have a body like ours.

▪   Angels don't eat or drink.

▪   Angels don't get hungry, and they don't get thirsty.

▪   Angels don't breathe.

As you can see, they truly are quite different from us.  Above all, the angels were created by Allah in such a way that they have no desires.  This means they don't desire to be rich or to be famous; they do not have any desires like ours.

They each have special duties, and each angel does his work as it is supposed to without any complaints.  They don't object and they don't complain, no matter what they are supposed to do.  They spend their time serving Allah and glorifying Him.

There are four Archangels who stand out.  They are as follows:

The first is Jubra'eel.  Jubra'eel, as you know, is the Angel who delivered Allah's Message to all of the Prophets, from Adam, the first Prophet, to Muhammad, the last.  He glowed bright with light, very handsome and very friendly, often with wings.

The second angel is Mee'Ka'eel (Michael).

   The third angel is Israfeel.

The fourth angel is Izra'eel.  Izra'eel is the Angel of Death.  He is the one whose duty is to take the soul when a person dies.

WILL THE ANGELS LIVE FOREVER?  go to top of page

The angels will not live forever.  By the time the Day of Judgment comes, everyone will be dead.  In addition to that, all of the angels will be dead, too.  They will be the last to die, the Angel Jubra'eel being the very last.

Only the Almighty, will be there.  Just as Allah was there before any creation, He will be there after all is gone.

When the universe as we know it is gone, and all Allah's creations are no longer, then, Allah (swt) will create all of us all over again.  All of us will be created as we are now, and so will the angels, animals, and other things.  All of us will stand to be judged by Him, Allah Himself.  Each one will be judged individually, alone, and justly.
