AL-SALAT ACCORDING TO

THE SHI'A WAY

AN IMPORTANT NOTE

There are several schools of thought in Islam.  The reader should follow the Islamic school of thought he believes in.  If he or she belongs to one of the four Sunni schools of thought, he can learn the Salat as it appears in the first section of this book.  The four schools are the Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maaliki, and Hanbali.

If he or she belongs to the Shi'a school of thought, he can learn the Salat as it appears in the second section of this book.  The two schools are the Ja'fari and the Zaidi.

Both ways are beautiful and the meaning of the words said is most moving and captivating.  The words glorify Allah Almighty and open the way of communion and connection between Allah and the worshipper.

PREPARING FOR THE SALAT

WUDU................. الوضوء    go to top of page

In the Ja'fari and Zaidi (Shi'a) Schools of Islamic Thought the Wudu is performed in the following manner:

  1. Declare the intention that it is for worship and purity.

  2. Wash the face fully once.

  3. Take water in the right hand and pour it in the left hand, then wash the right forearm from the elbow down to the hand and fingers.

  4. Take water in the left hand and pour it in the right hand, then wash the left forearm from the elbow down to the hand and fingers.

  5. Wipe the front central part of the head with the wet right hand.

  6. Wipe the upper surface of the right foot to the ankle with the wet fingers of the right hand.

  7. Wipe the upper surface of the left foot to the ankle with the wet fingers of the left hand.

Wudu is to be performed in the above order.  Once it is done it will be valid for as many Salats as a person wishes on one condition and that is not to break the Wudu.  Once the Wudu is broken it will have to be performed again before the next prayer.

WHAT BREAKS A WUDU

The Wudu is broken by one or more of the following:

  1. Going to the bathroom (urinating, having a bowel movement, passing gas).

  2. The flow of blood or pus from any part of the body, including the monthly periods of the female and the discharge of the semen of the male.

  3. Vomiting.

  4. Falling asleep.

  5.  Losing one's reason whatever the cause.

TAYAMMUM    التيـمم   go to top of page

A substitute for Wudu

The Tayammum is done in the following situations:

  1. When a person is sick and cannot use water.

  2. When a person does not have access to a sufficient amount of water.

  3. When using water may hurt the person or cause a disease.

  4. When doing Wudu would make the person miss a funeral prayer or Eid prayer, (which have no substitute).

HOW TO DO TAYAMMUM

The Tayammum is performed as follows:

  1. Strike the palms of both hands on pure earth, sand, dust, or stone.

  2. Wipe the forehead with the palms of your hands and go down the front part of the nose to its tip.

  3. Strike the palms of both hands on pure earth, sand, dust, or stone once more.

  4. Wipe the back of the right hand with the palm of the left hand.

  5. Wipe the back of the left hand with the palm of the right hand.
